18 June 2012 | SID-Lecture by Hilary Wainwright ‘Social Change, Civil Society, and the Role of the State’

The last lecture in the series will be delivered by Hilary Wainwright, research director at the Transnational Institute (TNI), and co-editor of Red Pepper. In our rapid changing societies, it is often the state that codifies what society has already developed and accepted in terms of social change and innovation. We need such innovation and social transformation in order to cope with the challenges of new scarcities. What role has the state, if any, in these processes? And what kind of state?

This evening SID will, in cooperation with HIVOS, launch the June issue of the Development Journal entitled ‘Citizenship for Change’. If you are interested in receiving this quarterly journal, read about how to become a SID Member here.

12 June 2012 | Colloquium ’A Critical Gender Lens on Greening the Economy’

This colloquium will feature cutting edge analysis of gender and environmental issues that reveal some of the flaws of the current trend to ‘green’ the economy. It brings together perspectives from women engaged in advocacy work around climate justice and solidarity economics to in-depth cases studies on the global value chain and agricultural policy. This event will include the book launch of ‘Women Reclaiming Sustainable Livelihoods’.

Speakers: Molly Scott Cato (Roehampton University), Ana Agostino (Co-Chair of GCAP) and Jayati Ghosh (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Irene Dankelman (Nijmegen University) and Noortje Verhart (Royal Tropical Institute/KIT).

This is the second colloquium in a series of four colloquia on the ‘Green Economy’. With the Earth Summit (Rio+20) coming up in June and several other initiatives that take the concept as its starting point, 2012 is a crucial year to critically rethink the green economy. The colloquia are meant for everyone interested in critically debating the concept and practices of the green economy, and are open to academics, policy-makers and staff from NGOs and companies.

14 September 2012 | SID NL Annual Conference ‘The State in a Globalizing World: Providing Water in Africa

On Friday September 14 the SID NL annual conference will take place in the Glazen Zaal in The Hague. This year we cooperate with the African Studies Centre (ASC) and Vitens Evides International (VEI), supported by NCDO and the Worldconnectors.

The conference is the closing session of the SID 2011-2012 Lecture Series ‘The State in a Globalizing World: problematic, yet indispensable’, in which we aim to understand the changing role of the nation state, and its relations with other actors including other states, corporates and civil society. During the conference we will apply the gained knowledge to the vital theme of providing water. We will look at the cooperation of a private partner with both the Dutch and an African State in providing drinking water to households. What works and what does not? Who is responsible for what within the reality of multi-level-governance, among a variety of actors? The background paper can be found here. The programme will follow soon.

You can register by sending an email to registration@sidnl.org stating your name and affiliation.
