The Society for International Development (SID) is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to international cooperation and development. Founded in 1957, it counts over 3000 members in 80 countries and 45 local chapters. Over the years, SID has been at the forefront of shaping the theory and practice of development, challenging existing practices and suggesting alternative approaches. The philosophy of SID is that it is only through an integrated approach to questions of development and social change that progress in the areas of human rights, democracy, pluralism and participation can be expected.

SID Netherlands is one of the 45 chapters of SID International and applies this synergistic approach by acting as an independent platform organisation, bringing together policy makers, academics, NGOs, the private sector, journalists and others to drive forward the development debate in the Netherlands and beyond, and subsequently influencing the policy discussion. SID NL is one of few organisations in the Netherlands which applies this approach by creating strategic partnerships with other relevant initiatives and organisations.

What makes SID a unique actor in the development arena is its network with over 3000 members. It works with more than 100 associations, networks and institutions involving academia, parliamentarians, students, political leaders and development experts, both at local and international level.

Board and organisation

The Netherlands Chapter consists of a Board, a Secretariat, and a small team at the secretariat for carrying out the activities under supervision of a Director. In addition, an Advisory Council has recently been set up in order to give input regarding content of SID NL’s main activities.
